Up The Mountain Churches

Gheralta, Ethiopia

  • BACK TO Videos
  • When I first got to Ethiopia I had 2 main goals; the first goal was to satisfy my desire for change since, up to that point, most of my work was focused on different parts of Asia. I wanted to challenge myself to make a new photography project in a completely new environment, one that had no cultural similarities with the other places I've travelled to previously.

The second goal was to expand the way I was sharing my work online. I was looking for a way that would be more personal than my previous photo essays & blogs, as well as visually engaging, a way to share my own experiences both as a traveller and photographer... so without further ado, here is my very first vlog, a story about my first few days in the ancient mountain churches of Tigray in Ethiopia - Enjoy!

The name of the kid who led us to the mountains is Mhretab Gebru, I photographed him on an isolated mountain near a church named Korkor Mariam. A church in which he has spent the last few years serving as a deacon and helping the old priests.

When I met 15 year old Mhretab he was at a crossroads in his life, trying to choose between two very different paths. The first path is of the old world which would ultimately lead him to become a priest in one of the ancient mountain churches.

The other path, a more modern one, would allow him to follow his own personal interest and pursue a university degree as he dreams to become a biologist.

In Ethiopia there are many kids, just like Mhretab, that are facing similar crossroads in their lives. This is not only because of Ethiopia's extensive modernization but also due to the severe drought that has been going on in the last few years, these circumstances are forcing many families to re-evaluate their lifestyle and the future of their children and with it the future of Ethiopia.

Your work is like poetry for my eyes. It makes me sad in a beautiful melancholic way. It makes me dream. Keep up the great vlog. I like the way you r presenting your work ???

THIS VIDEO ROCKS! Awesome choices going with DJI and Canon, by the way. I've always loved the way canon brings that vivid pop of color to every shot. I bet it was a lot of fun flying a drone there, but I'm guessing the crosswinds were a challenge! Can't wait to see more in the future!
